Dive into this late-pass-status post from KISSEY (fka Kissey Asplund) whose EP Unplug The Delusional Monkey dropped earlier this year, but I’m only just now discovering. Dancing to a different tune, KISSEY and her creative partners endeavor to travel across a wide range of musical borders in pursuit of a singularly mosaic sound. Rock, Pop, RnB, Hip Hop, Electronica…are all in tow and explored in more than just a superficial fashion. Tracks like the massively laid and serrated rocknrolla “Buy Yourself” and its solar wind riding cousin “GFY (Go Fuck Yourself)” meld rock & electronica into muscular numbers that are deftly held firm by KISSEY‘s pearlescent voice (which sounds beautifully femme fatale-ish on the former). The mechanical piston stomp of “Kiss The Ground” skips heedlessly through a no-mans-land lying between Industrial Electronica, Hip-Hop, Art-Rock, Post-Punk…and a few other labels that escape me at the moment….and builds something brilliantly heavy, unforced, and catchy. Other standouts include a near cinematic experience titled “Delusional” and a bowing bit of circuitry-funk called “Unplug”. Originally from Sweden, the multi-talented singer, songwriter, producer and dancer known as KISSEY grew up creating music with anything she could get her hands on as a child; after earning her fine arts degree, she made the transatlantic jump to New York in 2011. The new EP marks her most realized and genre-defying sound to date. Producers Sean C & LV (Jay-Z, Dead Prez) and mix engineer Blair Wells (A Tribe Called Quest) brought their low end knock to to KISSEY’s experimental approach and passionate, poetic delivery, resulting in a thoroughly modern take on electronica and trip hop vibes for a new generation.
